November 5, 2026
This Saturday, Nov. 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the 700 block of Laurel Street hosts what the city calls "our city's first Diwali Downtown celebration." For most of the past three years, that block's regular uses have been the Sunday farmers' market, the December lights and a growing number of Adirondack chairs. Saturday adds a new one.
It runs three hours on one block. Most of the lineup comes from close by: dance groups, a henna artist and a children's author on the program, with a shop at 653 Laurel St. as the sponsor. Seen together, the event says something about where downtown San Carlos is headed. The closed block was built to be a public room, and this fall that room picked up a new festival and a new store at about the same time.
The 700 block of Laurel Street didn't close for Saturday. It closed permanently under Ordinance 1605, which the City Council adopted on Dec. 11, 2023. So the Diwali celebration needs no special event-day closure. The city's announcement names the 700 block as the site and doesn't list any other blocks.
The city has spent 2026 furnishing that space. Its downtown revitalization blog reported more Adirondack chairs along Laurel in August and new information boards on the 700 block in late September. In May, the city redid the farmers' market layout. Booths moved back from the curbs, vendors spread into Wheeler Plaza, Cherry Street reopened to traffic and parking, and seating, umbrellas and games arrived.
One part of the block is still a work site. Harrington Park, at 753 Laurel St., has been under construction since spring 2026, and the city expects it to be done in early 2027. The project page says construction vehicles may not use Laurel Street. Crews reach the site through the rear alley and use Cherry and Olive streets to get to El Camino Real. The city has also said the work is not expected to affect customer access to Laurel storefronts. On Saturday, the festival and the future park share the same block.
The Diwali Downtown page lists a lineup built mostly around performance and hands-on activities:
The city's news announcement adds "sweet and savory treats" to that list. Volunteers can still sign up through the event page. Anyone who wants to help plan the event can reach the city's Special Events division at [email protected].
The event page has one line of thanks: "Thank you to Muditā for supporting this event!" Muditā is a small shop at 653 Laurel St. that sells South Asian art and crafts. The San Mateo Daily Journal reported this fall that it was set to officially open the weekend of Sept. 12–13, after weekend soft openings.
Owner Nidhi Patel told the Daily Journal that the idea came from trying to fill her own San Carlos home with Indian art. She realized no storefront on the entire Peninsula was dedicated to authentic art and crafts made in India, and she moved quickly when the Laurel Street space became available. The name is a Sanskrit word for the joy a person feels at someone else's success and good fortune. She explained her aim to the paper this way:
"This is not just meant for the Indian community, this is my way of showcasing Indian history to the world."
According to the Daily Journal's account, you walk in through a garden of plants for sale, modeled on the lush entryways of older Indian homes. Almost everything in the store comes directly from artisans in India. Patel's own exceptions include a Tandoori Masala olive oil she especially likes.
A Laurel Street shop that opened this fall is now backing a celebration on the same street. That is what the car-free block was supposed to make possible. 653 Laurel is a short walk from the 700 block, so the shop is an easy stop before or after the performances.
Saturday is the outdoor part of a citywide Diwali schedule. The city says the San Carlos Library hosts Diwali programs on Nov. 5, 12 and 13. The Adult Community Center held its weekday celebration on Friday, Nov. 6, and the Youth Center offered a drop-in Diwali garland craft on Thursday, Nov. 5. Two library programs are still to come:
| Date | Time | Program | Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday, Nov. 12 | 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. | Storytime & Drawing Demo With Nidhi Chanani | Interactive storytime, artist and author talk, draw-along and Q&A |
| Friday, Nov. 13 | 1 to 2:30 p.m. | Painting Diwali Diyas | Registration closes Nov. 12 |
Today is the last day to register for the diya painting session. The Chanani storytime is this afternoon. The library lists it under its Children 6–11 category, and it includes a drawing demonstration where kids draw along with the author. San Mateo County Libraries keeps both on its San Carlos Diwali events listing.
So a family could make Diwali a three-day weekend without leaving town: a storytime on Thursday, painting clay lamps on Friday, then dance and henna on Laurel on Saturday.
The Diwali celebration also starts a busier stretch on Laurel. The San Carlos Farmers' Market runs year-round on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Laurel between Cherry Street and San Carlos Avenue, so it's back the next morning, Nov. 15.
Three weeks later comes Night of Holiday Lights on Friday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. It runs along Laurel between San Carlos Avenue and Cherry Street, with the main stage on Cherry. The city is advertising kids' activities, crafts, treats, snow and performances. Wild Child plays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with local youth performers, Santa and the Snow Queen also on the bill.
One deadline overlaps Diwali week. Applications for youth vendors at Night of Holiday Lights are due Friday, Nov. 13, at 11:59 p.m. A young person who wants a table on Dec. 4 has until the night before Diwali Downtown to apply.
The Adult Community Center keeps its own calendar going too. It has a free Holiday Decorating Day on Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to noon and Winter Bingo on Dec. 10 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Diwali Downtown starts at 11 a.m. Saturday on the 700 block of Laurel, and muditā is a block away at 653 Laurel.
